I think I could live with that: granted, we’d never get to see William Shatner’s famous “I’M CAPTAIN KIRK!!!” scenery-chewing moment, but we’d also never realize there was ever supposed to be one; also, Leonard Nimoy would still have those pointy ears and still be Spock, but he’d do a lot more smiling throughout the series (since that pilot episode never established that Vulcans weren’t supposed to get emotional).
Posited: Without the unique chemistry which Shatner, Nimoy (now playing the role emotionless), and Kelley brought to the show, it would have been canceled that year or the next, without the massive fanbase.
Yes, but again, we’d be none the wiser that it was supposed to have all those fans; kinda like that Earth Star Voyager pilot that never got picked up and made into a series. (Ever wondered whether there’s some Sliders-style alt-Earth where that series is a big thing by now?)
